We’ve been sold the idea that taking care of a newborn means buying all the “right” stuff—like having the perfect stroller, the best swaddle, or a changing table that matches the nursery décor.
And sure, some of those things can be helpful or even fun to shop for. But let’s be honest—none of them are actually necessary for your baby to thrive.
Here’s the truth that doesn’t get said enough:
Your baby needs YOU.
And you need nourishment, rest, and support.
Here’s what I wish more families knew:
You don’t have to do this alone.
And you don’t have to settle for cold meals, microwave oatmeal, and wondering when you last drank water.
That’s why I’m so excited to share what my friend Skylar at Deep Roots Doula Care is offering for families in the Lincoln and Southeast Nebraska area.

She’s created two incredibly thoughtful postpartum services that I truly believe more people need to know about:
Sacred Window Kitchen
Twice a month, Skylar prepares warm, grounding meals based on ancestral nourishment principles—delivered to your home or made fresh in your kitchen. These meals are designed with postpartum bodies and hearts in mind. And guess what? You don’t have to be a brand-new parent to benefit. If you’re months or even years into postpartum and still feel depleted (hi, most of us), this is for you.
Freezer Meal Prep Day
This option is so customizable. You and Skylar work together to plan a menu based on your tastes and dietary needs, and then she either delivers your meals or makes them in your kitchen. You end up with a stocked freezer full of nourishing meals, ready to heat whenever you need them. (Which, let’s be real, is probably all the time in the first few months.)
Let’s reframe what “preparing for baby” really means.
It’s not about having the perfect gear.
It’s about making sure you’re held, you’re fed, you’re taken care of—so you can care for the tiny human who already thinks you hung the moon.
So when you’re making your baby prep list, include this:
A postpartum support plan
Nutrient-dense meals (that you don’t have to cook)
A way to ask for and receive help
Community. Real, tangible community.
And if you're local to Lincoln, Skylar is one of those people you want in your village.
Oh, and did you know...?
Support like doula care and birth photography can absolutely be added to your baby registry, too. Because while that stroller might be used for a few years at best, the right support sets you up for a lifetime…
…and the photos? They last generations. It's literally your family's legacy.
