Family

SESSION GUIDE

Your Fam-damily is unique. Your photos will be, too.

Your session will highlight what's great - and real - about your family. Your photos won't look like anyone else's, because your family is unlike anyone else's.

Around here, we don't say "cheese"

We don't "sit still"

No stuffy poses. No annoyed kids (or husbands).

Lets goooooo!

Outdoor Sessions

Let's find somewhere fun, and play! When doing an outdoor or on-location session, I love to find somewhere fun to hang out and do something you and your family really enjoy (Ice cream? Yes please. Splash pad? Even better). Then I'll document you and your family making memories!

For outside sessions, make sure that you take the elements of nature into consideration - basically the same considerations you'd take any other time you take your kiddos out into the elements. I recommend bringing lots of bug spray in the summer time, and clothes that make sense for the weather (comfort over style definitely wins here).

There may be times when I ask you to interact with nature in a way you weren't expecting - perhaps putting your bare feet in a stream or walking through tall grass. I often go with the flow during sessions, and respond as inspiration strikes.  However, if there is ever something I ask you to do that you are not comfortable doing, please don't hesitate to say "no thank you"!  (I promise you won't hurt my feelings :)

In-Home Sessions

Get your house everyday clean (not "oh shit my mother-in-law is coming over" clean).  I'm not here to judge - I'm here to capture your life just as it is in this season. And if that means shoving some stuff under the bed or in a closet, I won't tell if you won't...

Your kids probably have toy cars and barbies all over the floor right now - and there will be a time when they'll be gone and your house will be squeaky clean all the time. So let's capture this year just how it is - because next year and the year after that things will be different.

Don't be surprised if I show up and just hang out for a bit with my camera over my shoulder turned off. I love to come in, get down on the floor with the littles, and let them show me their favorite things. Soon we'll be buddies and my camera won't even phase them!

Once we warm up a bit, we'll pick an activity that you love to do with your family during this season and I'll capture you making those memories.

Do you love baking together? Or having pillow fights in the basement? Or maybe your bedtime routine is extra sweet and you just wish you could just freeze those little moments while they last...

Whatever it is, make sure it's something that actually matters to you - not something you think looks good on Instagram. Because these are for you and your family - not the social media gods (but I think they'll be worth sharing anyway 😘)

Do's (and don'ts)

DO relax!  If you follow nothing else in this guide, do this one.  Your kiddos will mirror your energy - so if you are happy and relaxed, they are much more likely to be happy and relaxed too! Remember, these photos are about capturing real moments with your family.  So let go of perfection for a bit, and just enjoy being present without worrying about how the photos are turning out. I promise if you look relaxed, they'll turn out great - I ask for your trust here. You want these photos to capture the best in you, not the stress in you.

DO make sure everyone has a full belly. Nobody has fun when they're hangry...

DON'T try to force your kiddo(s) (or pets) into poses or activities they're just not in to. Not only will it stress you out, it'll make them unhappy, which makes for unhappy memories, which makes for not so great photos.

DO give gentle encouragement and positive feedback to your kiddos during the session - and follow their lead!

DON'T "say cheese". Remember, it's not about me and the camera, or perfect smiles. It's about you and real family memories.

DO wear comfortable clothes and shoes you can move around in.

DO Be open and silly.  Be yourself and have fun!

  • You aren't available when labor starts?
I structure my life and business so that I can drop everything to be available to attend your birth whenever it happens - whether that's at 3am on a random Tuesday or on Christmas morning. I put every measure is in place to make sure that I am available, no matter when your birth happens. That being said, birth and life are unpredictable - and birth cannot be rescheduled. I have trusty back up photographers I can call on if needed due to an illness, injury, or other unexpected events that could arise that prevent me from attending your birth. If a backup photographer is needed, they will attend and photograph your birth, but I will edit and deliver your images to you. I will finish what we started, so you do not need to worry about "switching" photographers half way through the process.
  • You miss my birth?
Knock on wood, I have never missed a birth I was scheduled to attend. However, the only guarantee in birth is that it is unpredictable. If I miss your birth due to circumstances out of my control (ie: inclement weather that prevents travel, precipitous birth, etc.) then your birth package can be transferred to a coming home session or a baby's first year package.
  • My birth plan changes?
I feel like a broken record - but birth is unpredictable. Sometimes your birth story takes a turn that no one expected, and we just have to roll with it. Many moms wonder what will happen if they are planning a vaginal birth, but end up having to have a c-section. The policy at most hospitals currently is that only one support person is allowed in the OR with the birthing parent. Most people (understandably) will choose their partner to accompany them. However, it's worth talking with your provider and calling the hospital to see what their current policies are, so we can plan ahead. If I am disallowed from entering the OR to photograph your delivery, I will capture everything I can up to and after the surgery. I also would encourage your partner to take photos on their cell phone, which I can then edit and include in your birth gallery to tell the full story. No matter how your story unfolds, my goal is to capture everything I can, while holding the safety of you and your baby as my highest priority. In the event of an emergency, I will follow the direction of the medical professionals on your team.
What to wear

What to wear

Comfort over style 100%

So...outfits. This is something so many people stress over when it comes to family photos, and I'm here to tell you that it really doesn't freaking matter. What matters most during your session is that everyone is comfortable and their outfit reflects their own personality

Does your kiddo wear the same dang tutu or batman cape every day and you're tired of looking at it, but that's what they really want to wear? Let them. Someday they'll grow out of it, and I promise you'll love reminiscing on these days when they had to wear it All. The. Time.

That being said, here are a few tips to make sure everyone feels great in whatever they're wearing.

Wear something you can move around in easily

Choose something that makes you feel put together enough to run to the grocery story, but still super comfortable

Embrace the weird crap your kids want to wear - seriously.

*My one and only real "rule" is to avoid hats and sunglasses if possible. Not because you don't look amazing in a baseball cap or rad shades, but because these tend to cover the face (ie fun expressions). So in the interest of having everyone's face and full expressions captured, it's best to go without. But again, you do you.

After the session

After your Session

After your session I will get to work on choosing the best of the best images (typically between 20-35) and edit them to perfection. Once they're ready and uploaded to your gallery, I'll be in touch to schedule your 24-hour slideshow window.

Your Slideshow:

When you get the slideshow link, I encourage you to make an event of it! Put it up on the big screen, grab some popcorn and a yummy beverage, turn the volume up and snuggle up on the couch to watch it together. The first time you see your photos is always the best, so make the most of it!

Once you've seen your slideshow,  you have 24 hours to choose and purchase your collection (A, B or C - if you need a refresher on those, click here). Once payment is received for your collection, your gallery will be open for a full 30 days to download your images and use your print credit.

The "Artisan Edit":

Once your gallery is fully opened, you'll notice you have a collection of images titled "Artisan Edit." Those images are my favorites that I've chosen to use in my portfolio and marketing. At that time, I will ask that you approve those images to be used in this way, or let me know what specific images you do not want me to share prior to your gallery expiration.

Downloading your files:

Once you've decided on your favorite images for your download credit (or all images if you chose Collection C), then I encourage you to download those right away.  The process is simple, and I will send you step-by-step instructions on how to download them from your online gallery.  Once you've downloaded them, I highly recommend backing them up to a cloud service, like Dropbox or Google Drive.

Copyrights (and wrongs):

Once you've got your digital files in hand, you are free to print them when, where, and as often as you wish.  You can use them for holiday cards, share on your social media, or send personalized gifts to friends and family. The only thing you can't do is resell them for commercial or business use - for example, you wouldn't be able to enter them into a contest to win prize money, or use them on the cover of your book (but if you are writing a book - please let me know! I'd love to read it ;).  If you love your photos enough to share them on your social media, please tag me in them so your friends know who to contact for their family photos!

Printing your images:

While everything I offer in my store is printed in professional labs and guaranteed to be beautiful and long-lasting, I also recognize that you may want to print your images yourself for future projects, gifts, etc. - and thanks to those digital files, you can!  However, not all photo printers are created equal.  For the best quality and color accuracy, I recommend Rockbrook Camera (in Lincoln), and mpix.com for online printing. Be sure to de-select any "color correction" options, and upload the original files you downloaded (not copies of the files). The files you receive from me should allow you to print as large as you like.

What you do with your images is perhaps the most important aspect to consider when you're planning for a photo session - but it's all too often the part that's overlooked

You've invested time and money. You deserve better than photos gathering dust on a hard drive somewhere (or worse yet - lost in the digital ether). You will never get the same feeling looking at your photos on a screen as you will seeing them on your wall or flipping through them in an album, so I include a substantial print credit with every collection.
